I thought I might start listing supposed classics which I think are a bit shit.
Three which immediately spring to mind are:-
(1) On the Road, by Jack Kerouac.
Couple of wankers criss-cross the U.S. three or four times. One of them craps on about it for three or four hundred pages. Hipsters worship them.
(2) Catcher in the Rye, by J.D.Salinger.
Annoying teenager runs away from his prep school or something.
(3) Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, by Robert Pirsig.
Hippy thinks he's wise.
Here's an author who must be execrated and his works anathematised:-
(4) Charles Bukowski.
Bar bore somehow gets elevated to the status of countercultural hero.
This is what Austen, Dickens, Trollope, Scott Fitzgerald, Graham Greene, Anthony Powell, Proust, Burgess, George Elliot, Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, Conrad, Woolf, etc are for: so that you don't have to read the wank the hipsters and the hippies like.
I shall add further entries as and when they occur to me.
